Sometimes they have a red combination on the black or white markings on the chest. Certain strains of the breed even have a small white patch on the chest. Their wiry, dense outer coat involves regular grooming.

They could do well with other dogs, especially if they are socialized from puppyhood. They are loyal and protecting of their family. They like learning which enable it to be trained easily provided training is fun and not monotonous.

The breed dates itself back to 18th century England. The breed is a cross involving an Otterhound and a Waterside Terrier. They were bred for hunting lesser wild animals and were afterward utilised in big game hunting, police work and as a military dog in WWII. The Airedale Terrier is thought more of a household pet than a working dog. In spite of this, they do love to work and have tasks to undertake and yet make good hunting and tracking dogs
