The continent of Antarctica is a place like no other in the world with its stark beauty and brutal climate and terrain. The uniqueness also comes from the fact it's the only continent on earth that has never been bloodied by war. Even though this continent is much larger than both Europe and American combined, less men have died to natural type causes due to the lack of germs, than they have died of violent deaths.
Present day Antarctica is a continent of contradictions as men of opposing political views labor in harmony, warm and contented three short inches away from a 100 degree below zero environment where blood freezes in seconds. The people of Antarctica house the biggest appetites, garnishing up to four whole meals in a single day without a single spec of weight gain. The cold eats the calories faster than any exercise or diet could ever possible do.
Also, a special type of illness called the "Big Eye" afflicts many of the population. Due to the long days and 3-am sunshine, many people find it very difficult to sleep. Antarctica holds claim to the most exclusive club on Earth, the "300 Degree Club." If you like a drink at the end of the day you'll find the cheapest bar on the planet at the South Pole, where a beer or a cognac costs the same - but you may discover your bar bill can run a lot higher than you can imagine. From April to September, the people there experience long nights.
Its heartland is blanketed with a 9,000-foot sheet of ice in motion, and yet geologists state that it may harbor a sufficient quantity of oil, gas and coal to heat the world. It is odd that there are virtually no laws on this continent, making it so that no criminal could ever be extradited. As a matter of fact, if he/she was able to survive, he/she would have almost nine million square miles of wide open spaces, broad valleys and 15,000-foot mountain ranges to disappear in.
Antarctica's crime rate is the lowest of all the continents, but there are no governing statutes. Many say it could be the site of the perfect crime. As a matter of fact, if murder has ever taken place here, no charges where ever brought against the murderer. There are no statutes, nor are there treaties concerning extradition, so that a murderous felon could be brought to justice anywhere on Antarctica.
Even though the flags of 10 nation are planted in Antarctica, not a single one has tried to open up real estate there. There has not been a single attempt by any nation to try and form some type of permanent colony here. Even so, some of the most brilliant minds and best technology resides here.
The mostly short-term residents have a per capita IQ that is the largest on the planet. There is no other place on Earth were more people have a university degree than a high school diploma. The scientific knowledge on the continent exceeds that of any university, and the climate of the research is more peaceful than can be found in any capital on earth. Unlike any other land mass in the world, no nuclear experiments of any kind can take place on this continent.
The environmental laws on the planet are in effect in Antarctica. Specific licensing is necessary to harvest animals which were subject to slaughter a brief century past by whalers and sealers. Today's Antarctica has become a the playground for pure scientific research, and the scientists involved work very hard to keep it in a pristine condition.
